The Save A Lot grocery store model is designed to help new licensees get started quickly and comes with lots of built-in support. That said, every licensee will have a unique experience – that’s why we like to share examples of real licensees, what led them to Save A Lot, and where they’re at on their journeys. Today, let’s get to know Jenny Kute, a co-owner of two stores whose father is also a Save A Lot retail partner.
Why Jenny Chose Save A Lot
Jenny and her husband, Craig, opened their first Save A Lot store in Louisville, Kentucky, back in 2005. Her father, who very much enjoyed being a retail partner himself, tipped her off to the opportunity. She already knew that Save A Lot’s grocery store model was solid, but what really compelled her to invest was the flexibility licensees enjoy:
. . . it all came back to the lifestyle in which we wanted to raise a family. I thought about my father and the kind of life he led while I was growing up. He worked hard but had the flexibility to be there for me and my siblings. He was at our ball games, worked from home when he could, and was there for us whenever we needed him. And as we looked deeper into it, we decided that what we wanted most for our family was control, flexibility, and stability.
The Opening Process
Once Jenny and Craig had made their decision, they worked hard to achieve their goal: living in his parents’ basement to save money, choosing the right location, and making the necessary renovations. She could tell at their grand opening that they had made the right choice in committing to our grocery store model – there was already a line of eager new customers!
Growing Their Business
Our grocery store model has a number of built-in opportunities for growth, but Jenny and Craig understand that going above and beyond to connect with their customers is key. They give to local food banks, run an Instagram, and regularly engage with customers. All of this helps raise awareness of their business while providing them unique insights into the products their local customers want – Jenny explains, “a great aspect of the Save A Lot program is allowing individual retailers to customize their product selections.”
Their hard work and willingness to interact with their customers has paid off, as Jenny and Craig now operate two Save A Lot stores, with the potential for more in the future.
Jenny attributes their growth, in part, to the strong communication between herself and Craig. They make informed decisions together and are committed to tackling every decision as a team. They’re a great example of what investment partners can achieve when they set their minds to it.
